Bamboo Guy's Bamboo Varieties

Ground cover bamboos are sold in 1, 2, and 3 gallon sizes. Clumpers generally are sold in 5 and 10 gallon sizes. Medium and large sized runners are sold in 5 gallon and larger pots and field divisions. Priced accordingly.

Fargesia--a small clumping bamboo with small leaves from the alpine forests of China.
   F. Nitida--shade loving clumper from China; thin, small leaves, with a graceful fountain look. Heights to 12',hardiness to -20 degrees.
    F. Nitida "Nymphenburg"--differs from the type by narrow leaves and strongly arching culms. Hardy to -20 degrees.


Hibanobambusa--an aggressive running bamboo from Japan thought to be a hybrid between Sasa Veitchii and Phyllostachys Nigra Henon.
   H. Tranquillans "Shiroshima"--a busy, variegated bamboo with large green and cream striped leaves. One of my favorites. To heights of 10'.

Indocalamus--a small running bamboo from China with large, broad leaves.
   I. Tessallatus--largest leaves of any bamboo with shiny, dark green leaves. Heights to 4'. Good in pots or borders.

Phyllostachys--medium to large hardy running bamboos.
   Ph. Aurea--a green upright bamboo, mid-sized green leaves with compressed nodes.
             Hardy to -18 degrees; makes a great hedge. 1 1/4" culms to 20'.
    Ph. A. Flavens-inversa--green culms with yellow sulcus or groove. 1 1/4" culms to 20'.
    Ph. A. "Koi"--yellow culms with green sulcus or groove. 1 1/4" culms to 20'.
    Ph. Aureosulcata--green zigzagged culms with yellow grooves. 1 3/4" culms to 25'.
    Ph. A. Aureocaulis--yellow culms with a few green stripes. 1 1/2" culms to 25'.
    Ph. A. Spectabillis--golden yellow culms with green groove. 1 1/2" culms to 25'.

    Ph. B. "Castillon"--gold culms with green groove. 2" culms to 35'.
    Ph. Decora--a stately green bamboo with large green leaves. 1 1/2" culms to 25'.
    Ph. Heteroclada Purpurta (Water Bamboo)--lush green bamboo with small leaves. Good wind break. 1" culms to 20'.
    Ph. Heterocycla Pubescens (Moso)--largest of the hardy bamboos. 7" culms to 75'.
    Ph. Nigra (Black Bamboo)--black culms with dark green leaves. 1 1/2" culms to 25'.

    Ph. N. Bory (Snake Skin Bamboo)--brown and black speckled green culms. Larger than its namesake. 3" culms to 50'.


    Ph. N. Henon--totally green and one of the largest bamboos. 4" culms to 60'.
    Ph. Viridis "Robert Young"--yellowish green culms with green stripes. 3" culms to 40'.


    Ph. Vivax--hardiest of the large timber bamboos. Gray green when mature. 5" culms to 70'.

Pleioblastus--small to medium size running bamboos. Good ground cover.
   Pl. Argentostriatus--long thin variegated leaves. Height to 24".
    Pl. Distichus--dwarf fernleaf bamboo--all green with small leaves. Height to 24".
    Pl. Pygmeus--similar to Distichus. Height to 24".
    Pl. Variegatus--dwarf whitestripe bamboo--bold green and white variegated leaves. Height to 24".

Pseudosasa--small to medium size running bamboos usually with only one branch per node.
   Ps. Japonica (Arrow Bamboo)--very aggressive straight culms with large leaves. Good for wind breaks and hedges and privacy screens. 1/2" culms to 20'.
   Ps. J. Tsutsumiana (Green Onion Bamboo)--similar to species with swollen internodes shaped like green onions. 3/4" culms to 18'.

Sasa--dwarf running bamboo less than 6' tall. Large leaves.
   Sasa Palmata--large green leaves on upright straight culms.

Semiarundinaria--medium size running bamboo with cylindrical culms. Medium size leaves.
   S. Fastuosa--erect straight culms which turn from green to purplish brown. 1 1/2" culms to 30'
   S. Okuboi--erect straight culms with large green leaves. 1 1/2" culms to 25'
   S. Yashadake 'Kimmei'--yellow culms with green grooves and yellow striped leaves. 1 1/2" culms to 20'.

Please note that listed sizes (diameter and height) are ideals in their natural environment. You should expect less than optimal size locally unless stated otherwise.
